Course Description:
This 8-hour course is designed to provide practical direction to police officers operating in a managerial/supervisory role during a line of duty death. The Incident Command System Format will be discussed which serves as an operational guide to manage the aftermath of an officer's death in the line of duty. The roles and responsibilities of the Incident Commander, Public Information Officer and Intelligence Gatherer are explained as they relate to the planning and operations, logistics and financial aspects of the incident. Varied courses of action are taken when factoring in the nature of the incident, for example: on-duty as opposed to off-duty; whether the incident is a homicide, multiple officers killed or even a suicide. A suicide situation falls outside the category of "line of duty death" but has the potential to cause greater emotional trauma to those involved. This course also discusses grief and its impact on the agency involved as well as the potential for secondary psychological trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  • Establish the Incident Command System Format
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of Incident Commander, Public Information Officer and the Intelligence Gatherer
  • Address the need for Personnel Records to be updated quarterly
  • Discuss the need to activate an Emergency Operations Center
  • Outline various scenarios of incident coupled with recommended responses
  • Describe action taken in a police officer suicide
  • Recognize grief and its impact on the agency
  • Realize the potential for secondary psychological trauma
  • Develop a phone list
