Course Description:
This 8-hour course is designed to provide tactics for prevention and intervention regarding suicides. The class discusses the scope of the suicide problem while offering statistics as well as the primary reasons police officers commit suicide. The subject of depression will be explored in-depth being exposed as the number one cause of suicide. The various effects of depression such as, behavioral, cognitive and physical changes will also be talked about. High risk factors along with the do’s and don’ts of intervention will be given to each participant as well. Regarding intervention, the QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Model will be explained as an effective method in handling suicidal people. Myths verses facts are given to help dispel previously held misinformation. Suicide clues and warning signs are identified to help the QPR intervention methods. The class closes by reminding each participant that…when they apply the concepts of QPR, they are planting the seeds of hope and hope helps prevent suicide.
