and physically fit, and able to do their job with the maximum
of professional expertise and the minimum of danger to themselves.
He examines the various pathologies that affect police officers
- perceptual distortions, PTSD, alcoholism and family dysfunction,
and acting out - and shows how officers can avoid them. The Hands

officers, whose occupation subjects them to endless hours of tedium
and monotony, periodically interrupted by moments of sheer terror.
