Our History

The Counseling Team International (TCTI) has provided employee support services to law enforcement, fire, emergency services, governmental agencies, private industries and organizations in the State of California, as well nationwide since it's founding in 1985. Nancy K. Bohl, Ph.D. is the Founder/Owner/Director of TCTI and is internationally recognized as an authority in trauma and an expert in the field of police and fire mental health issues.

As an intern under supervision in 1983, Dr. Bohl provided Critical Incident Stress Debriefings to San Bernardino County Sheriff's law enforcement personnel who had been involved in shootings. The immediate intervention which took place, decreased workers' compensation claims to such a degree, that TCTI was asked to extend their services, offering training, organization consultations, peer support supervision and counseling to law enforcement personnel and their families. After receiving her Marriage and Family Therapy License, she formed TCTI.

As the increase in demand for services grew so did personnel. TCTI employs a professional support staff to assist the Director and a team of dedicated mental health professionals operating out of our Headquarters' offices in San Bernardino as well as 11 satellite offices. Each mental health professional comes with expertise and training in all facets of emergency service psychology as well as defined counseling experience.

Dr. Bohl and TCTI psychotherapists (all licensed mental health professionals from many disciplines) have responded to major disasters/critical incidents such as:

The Oklahoma Bombing in Oklahoma City
The Unabomber case in Sacramento

Our counseling was designed to help employees and their immediate family members find direction in solving personal and emotional problems. TCTI's employee support services have also helped individuals in areas such as stress issues, depression, marriage & family issues, substance abuse, weight control, financial difficulties, suicide intervention, career concerns, individual growth, medical concerns and how to deal with tension and work related problems. It is our philosophy that the longer a problem exists the harder it is to deal with that problem. Often a problem is put into its proper perspective and handled if help is sought by the individual as soon as possible. We have found that employees are an organization's most valuable asset and losing them requires training replacements, which incurs enormous costs. TCTI's employee support services have increased employee productivity and have decreased the usage of sick leave by helping employees resolve the problems which are lowering their efficiency. This in turn has also helped solve the problems before they become so serious as to affect their work performance, family stability and health.

Dr. Bohl began training programs through TCTI in 1986. The training provided to employees has given them the information and skills necessary to maximize their ability to function as a team and to continue to develop productive careers.

In 1987, Dr. Bohl established the Psychological Testing and Screening Department under the direction of a licensed clinical psychologist. Since its beginning, hundreds of psychological testing applicants have completed the process with a licensed clinical psychologist.

For over two decades now, the mental health professionals (psychotherapists from different fields) of TCTI have helped employees cope with the stressors inherent in their careers. Over this time, it has been proven that employee support services are essential for an organization to function in a healthy manner, as well as provide for the mental and emotional health of their families.
