James D. Harris, Psy.D. has a
Doctorate in Psychology (PSB 27475), which he earned while working
full-time as a Deputy Sheriff for the County of Los Angeles. Dr. Harris
gained first hand understanding of the issues that surround Law
Enforcement during his 28 years of service. During his tenure with L.A.
County Sheriff's Department, he served as a Director of Peer Counseling
for almost 3 years and a trainer/lecturer for over 20 years. Dr. Harris
has now lectured to over 30,000 law enforcement officers on the topic
of emotional aftermath of Officer Involved Shooting incidents and
related critical incidents. In applying this perspective, Dr. Harris
serves at TCTI's office in San Bernardino as well as a satellite office
in Temecula, offering effective and credible information to his clients
as well as his class attendees. Dr. Harris is currently working on his
book entitled, The Hands of the Carpenter. In it he shows how police
officers can minimize both the "scaring and calluses" so they remain
psychologically and physically fit, and able to do their job with the
maximum of professional expertise and the minimum of danger to
themselves. He examines the various pathologies that affect police
officers - perceptual distortions, PTSD, alcoholism and family
dysfunction, and acting out - and shows how officers can avoid them.
The Hands of the Carpenter will be an invaluable survival guide for
police officers, whose occupation subjects them to endless hours of
tedium and monotony, periodically interrupted by moments of sheer
terror. Dr. Harris is certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing) therapy. He was also part of a team of Mental Health
Professionals that assisted those severely impacted by the September
11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. | | |
